Real Stories About Being A Carer

Kieran and Claire are care assistants/support workers with Starcare Ltd. They wanted to share their personal insights on why they love their job!

      Kieran

Before I came to care I was in a job that wasn’t for me, I felt I could do more and after watching my family in different care roles I decided to take the chance and take a career change.

One of my first clients was a lovely lady who had a brain tumour, her family had said that she could not remember many things and that she would say things that didn’t make sense due to her condition.

My first time being there with my Work Partner I asked her (trying to make conversation as best I could)
“What sort of music do you like?”
      “I can’t remember” she replied
“What about Frank Sinatra… Louis Armstrong?”
She smiled “oo I like them”

Later that night I decided to put some songs on my phone and the next morning I was back at the call and asked if she would like to listen to some music.
We played “Fly me to the moon” and in an attempt to make her smile I sang along to the words… and out of nowhere she sang back! Word perfect to the shock of everyone in the room.

Later that day I received a phone call from one of my managers asking what I had done in the call, confused myself I explained and asked why?

My manager then explained that my clients husband had called in tears asking for me to go back more often as since I had left and sang to her he “had his wife back” and the music had helped her remember and for the first time in a long time he could talk to her as he used too, even if it was for just an hour. I found this overwhelming.

Over the following months every morning we would sing together, bonding over the power of music, talking about her past and making her laugh all the way. Her family were so thankful and loving that we became a huge part of their lives as carers, a shoulder to try on and the support they needed. This lady redefined my idea of beauty and wonder as she had such a beautiful personality that no one could meet her and not love her.

Finally on the last day of her being at home (as she now needed to go into a nursing home) the family even waited for me and my work partner Sammi to get her ready as to say goodbye after our weekend off which filled us with emotion and pride in our work.

This lady made me realise know that care was for me and how much of a difference we made as a company and as individuals

My Journey started on the 12th of august 2016 after being in a career of being a cleaner, I wanted to try something that was out of my depth to see if i could push my self higher in a different career.

As I was looking through, I came across Starcare and read through it sounded really good so I sent an email through and instantly got a email back with and interview which went amazing and got the job by the end of it, then going out on the round on my first weekend it went amazing.

At first I didn’t think I could so it but so far i have met some amazing people along the way I don’t think I could ever go in to a job and enjoy it as much as I do with Starcare.

There has been up and downs but in a career of a support worker it wouldn’t be the right job if it didn’t have it, the bridges and challenges and I have came over to be where I am today as a senior/team leader also gaining qualifications that I didn’t think i would have achieved but I did.

This wouldn’t be without the staff and managers who have encouraged me when I thought i couldn’t do it but i am still here today and hopefully many years to come as the organisation is like family couldn’t ask for better and i couldn’t thank them all enough they are truly amazing xx
